The Kakching district police arrested Salam Oken Meitei, a 39-year-old personnel from the 7th IRB, for investigation related to the death of Ch. Malemnganba. Oken, a resident of the same locality as the deceased, is currently in police custody for 10 days following a remand ordered by a duty magistrate. In response to his arrest, the family of Malemnganba and local residents attempted to set fire to Oken’s belongings, but the situation was contained by multiple police units. Malemnganba, 51, was shot dead by unidentified assailants on March 13 at around 6:30 PM. A Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed to condemn the killing and has demanded a prompt and thorough investigation. The JAC organized a sit-in protest, insisting that no claims over Malemnganba’s body would occur until the perpetrators are identified and arrested, threatening further agitation if justice is not served expediently.
