The 18th foundation day of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, marked nearly two decades of service in medical education and healthcare in Northeast India. The celebration underscored JNIMS’s development in tertiary healthcare and its pursuit of excellence among leading medical institutions. Present at the ceremony were Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Sumant Singh (Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Health and Family Welfare), and Prof. L. Usharani Devi (Director, JNIMS). The Governor released the 18th Annual Report and the college magazine, Nongin, and recognized outstanding students with awards. He emphasized JNIMS’s significant impact on enhancing the State’s healthcare system through professional training and advanced treatment facilities, asserting that medical education should be rooted in compassion and ethical values. Additionally, he noted the institution’s responsibilities in research, innovation, and public outreach, urging it to strengthen research efforts and align with national health priorities. Sumant Singh highlighted the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s initiatives that have fortified JNIMS’s role, such as the establishment of a Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit, a Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, and a State Referral Laboratory for Rabies, along with a new 50-bed Critical Care Block. The event was attended by faculty, medical professionals, students, and distinguished guests.
