Kabui Union condemns mob for rescuing drug trafficking suspect in Lilong

The Kabui Union Manipur has condemned a recent incident in which a mob allegedly intervened and helped a drug trafficking suspect escape from police custody in Lilong Yangbi Leikai.

The incident took place on February 27 at around 7 pm when a combined team of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Imphal, Commando unit and Lilong Police attempted to arrest a suspect in connection with a drug case linked to seizures at the airport. The accused was identified as Md Sabir Ahammed, 26.

According to reports, members of the local public clashed with the police team during the operation. In the confusion, the suspect managed to escape. Officials have not confirmed whether any arrests were made in connection with the obstruction.

In a press statement issued from its head office at Mahabali Kabui village, the Kabui Union said the incident was not an isolated one and that similar cases have occurred in the past. The Union praised the efforts of the Manipur Police and civil society groups working to curb drug trafficking in the state.

At the same time, it criticised those who support or shelter people involved in the drug trade. The statement said that both lawbreakers and those who help them should face legal action. It described drug traffickers as people who are harming society for personal gain.

The Union urged the State Government to declare areas affected by drug trafficking as “Red Zones” to help enforce stricter control measures and move towards a drug-free Manipur. It also called on local clubs and Meira Paibi groups to strengthen vigilance by conducting entry checks in their localities.
