Major Anti-Drug Drive in Manipur as Security Forces Target Poppy Fields

Security forces in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district have taken significant action against illegal drug cultivation by destroying five acres of poppy fields. This operation, carried out on January 27 in the Machi Police Station area, is part of a broader initiative involving multiple agencies to eliminate narcotics networks in the state. Earlier efforts included the arrest of 65-year-old Hriili Kaihrii on January 19, who was found with 94 grams of suspected heroin at a checkpoint, and the apprehension of Md Ajmir Hussain, 39, found with 310 grams of heroin No. 4 on January 18. Additionally, a large-scale poppy destruction operation on January 19 led to the uprooting of approximately 22 acres of poppy cultivation and the burning of temporary structures in Churachandpur district. These successive operations indicate a concerted effort to disrupt both cultivation and trafficking of narcotics, addressing the complex issues of drug abuse, law enforcement, and public health in Manipur.
