Manipur CM Visits Relief Camp, Assures Justice to Victim’s Family; Pays Tribute to Slain BSF Constable

Yumnam Khemchand, Chief Minister of Manipur, visited a relief camp in Imphal East district on April 11 and met the family of a seven-year-old internally displaced girl who was recently raped and murdered, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage across the state.

During the visit, the Chief Minister interacted with the grieving family and other internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying at the camp. He expressed condolences and assured full support to ensure justice for the victim. The state government has also provided an ex gratia amount of ₹10 lakh to the bereaved family.

In a Facebook post, he stated that the welfare of IDPs remains a top priority. After listening to their concerns, he directed officials to take immediate action to address their grievances, focusing on reducing hardships and ensuring timely rehabilitation and resettlement.

“We remain committed to standing by every affected family and working tirelessly towards restoring dignity, stability, and hope in their lives,” he said.

The minor girl, originally from Moreh, had gone missing on April 4 and was found dead the next day under the Singjamei Bridge. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of displaced communities living in relief camps.

District Commissioner L. Nivedita said the administration is making every effort to ensure justice and confirmed that the accused has been remanded in custody.

During the interaction, displaced residents urged the Chief Minister to facilitate early resettlement in their native villages and demanded deployment of an IRB battalion in Moreh to strengthen security. Responding to these concerns, he assured efforts toward safe return while calling for rebuilding trust and harmony among communities.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also paid tribute to Mithun Mandal at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. In a Facebook post, he said he paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of the BSF constable, who laid down his life in the line of duty in Ukhrul district.

He praised Constable Mandal’s courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment, calling his sacrifice a testament to the indomitable spirit of India’s security forces. The Chief Minister stated that such sacrifices strengthen the nation and will continue to inspire future generations to uphold duty, honour, and patriotism.

He also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, adding that the people of Manipur stand in solidarity with them.
