Manipur Congress urges governor to act on Jiribam abductions amid escalating violence

The Congress Legislature Party in Manipur has formally requested urgent intervention from Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya for the safe release of six abducted civilians from Jiribam district, including three women and three children. In a memorandum submitted on November 13, Congress leaders highlighted the deepening humanitarian crisis in the state, aggravated by recent violence and ongoing unrest over the past 18 months.

The legislators detailed the distress of the victims’ families, who have been without news for more than 48 hours. They called on the Governor to intensify efforts to secure the hostages’ release and enhance civilian protections, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly, women, and children.

The memorandum voiced frustration over the government’s handling of the crisis, underscoring a perceived lack of response from both state and central leadership. Congress leaders criticized Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s administration, citing its failure to maintain law and order and protect citizens since May 2023, and noted an absence of decisive action from the Prime Minister’s Office and Union Home Ministry. At this critical juncture, the Congress appealed to Governor Acharya for immediate action, emphasizing the need to restore peace and stability for the welfare of Manipur’s citizens and the nation.
