Manipur declares ‘dry days’ in border districts ahead of Assam polls

The Manipur government has announced “dry days” in three districts bordering Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the neighbouring state. The move aims to maintain law and order and ensure that the polling process is conducted smoothly. According to an official notice issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Excise, Manipur, the restriction on sale and distribution of liquor will remain in force from 5:00 PM on April 7 to 5:00 PM on April 9. The timing has been fixed to cover the crucial period leading up to and during polling in Assam.

The order will apply to Tamenglong, Jiribam and Pherzawl districts, which share boundaries with Assam. These areas are considered sensitive during elections due to their proximity to poll-bound regions. The notification has been issued under Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, along with provisions of the Eastern Bengal and Assam Excise Act, 1910, which is applicable in Manipur. The order clearly states that there will be a complete ban on the sale, service and distribution of liquor during the specified period.

Officials said the step has been taken to prevent any possible misuse of alcohol to influence voters in nearby areas of Assam where polling will take place. Authorities believe that restricting liquor movement in border districts will help in maintaining a fair election environment. The ban will be enforced across all licensed outlets, including liquor shops, bars and hotels. Officials have also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the order.
