Manipur extends mobile internet suspension in seven districts

The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services in seven districts for two more days as a precautionary measure, despite no recent incidents of violence reported, officials confirmed on Saturday. The suspension, effective until 5:15 p.m. on November 25, impacts Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur districts. Commissioner of Home, N. Ashok Kumar, stated in an official order that the extension aims to prevent potential misuse of social media by anti-social elements, which could incite unrest through the spread of inflammatory content.

The mobile internet ban was first imposed after violence erupted in the valley districts on November 15 and 16, following the discovery of six bodies—three children and three women—in Jiribam district. Since then, the restriction has been extended periodically to maintain law and order.

However, acknowledging the challenges faced by the public, including students and healthcare institutions, the government has conditionally restored broadband services earlier this week to mitigate hardships.
