Manipur Home Minister Addresses Public Outrage Over Tronglaobi Blast; Phased Force Shift Considered

Manipur State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam confirmed on Saturday that a comprehensive investigation and intensive search operations are currently underway following the deadly bomb attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 176th death anniversary observance of Maharaja Nara Singh at Kangla Fort, the minister assured the public that authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible for the tragedy.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of April 7, has left the state in mourning and sparked significant civil unrest. A bomb targeting a local residence claimed the lives of two children while they were asleep and left their mother with serious injuries. The proximity of the blast site to a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp has fueled widespread public outrage, leading to intensified protests across the region.

Responding to growing demands from the community to replace central paramilitary forces with state police in peripheral areas, Minister Konthoujam revealed that the government is evaluating a phased redeployment strategy. He explained that the administration aims to shift certain central units to higher altitude “upper hill” areas while positioning state forces in the peripheral zones. However, he cautioned that immediate and total replacement is currently hindered by significant manpower constraints within the state’s security apparatus.

Protesters have remained vocal in their condemnation of the attack, with many calling for central forces to vacate the area, citing concerns over local accountability and the effectiveness of current security measures. Demonstrators argue that the presence of state forces would provide a more nuanced and responsive security presence for the local population.

While the Home Minister declined to share specific details regarding the progress of the probe—citing the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigation—he reiterated that security forces have significantly intensified their presence in the Bishnupur area. The situation in Tronglaobi remains tense as the community awaits justice, and the state government balances strategic security redeployments with the urgent need to maintain law and order.
