The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC), Manipur, has mapped more than 1,000 springs across the state, with 173 critically stressed springs in Ukhrul and Noney districts identified for revival under a priority scheme.
The information was shared by Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change), during the release of the Environment Calendar 2026 at Porompat in Imphal East district.
Addressing the function, Sinha said the directorate, as the state’s nodal agency, has also delineated and mapped 71 wetlands across Manipur. Of these, three wetlands have been officially notified, while four others are currently undergoing rejuvenation work. He stressed that protecting and conserving natural resources is a collective responsibility to ensure sustainability for future generations.
The principal secretary noted that the Environment Calendar 2026 forms part of the directorate’s environment information and dissemination programme, highlighting key environmental events and observances at the global, national and state levels. He added that the department first introduced its environment calendar in 2013.
The calendar marks major environmental observances throughout the year, beginning with World Wetlands Day on February 2, followed by World Water Day in March, World Earth Day in April, International Day for Biological Diversity in May, World Environment Day in June, World Nature Conservation Day in July, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in August, World Ozone Day in September, and International Mountain Day in December.
Sinha further explained that most months in the calendar are thematically designed around these observances. The January page features the Dzüko Valley during winter, while February highlights a hill water body in Tamenglong district. March depicts the natural flow of the Barak River, April focuses on the beauty of spring, and May showcases migratory birds across wetlands.
Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh also addressed the gathering. The event was attended by department staff, officials and members of the media resource centre.
