Manipur observes National Press Day with strong call to protect media credibility

Manipur marked National Press Day this year with a renewed call to defend the credibility of the media amid growing concerns over misinformation, shrinking editorial independence and the fast-changing digital landscape. The state-level observance, organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), placed the theme “safeguarding press credibility” at the heart of the discussions. Senior officials, editors and reporters used the occasion to highlight the mounting challenges journalists face while delivering accurate and verified information. The state’s Information Secretary warned that misinformation in the digital age had reached a stage where the fundamental responsibility of the press—providing factual news—was under threat. He questioned whether journalists in Manipur currently operate in conditions that truly allow independent and pressure-free reporting, pointing out that competing demands from various groups often complicate the work of media professionals.

Speakers also underlined the rapid shift in audience behaviour, noting that a large share of the public now consumes news through social media rather than traditional platforms. In such a scenario, they said, it has become even more important for reporters to distinguish credible reportage from unverified online content. The IPR Director added that information and misinformation now travel at equal speed, urging media houses to resist the race for breaking news and instead hold firm to verification and accuracy. Even minor alterations in headlines, he cautioned, can inflame tensions or distort narratives. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence tools also drew attention during the programme. While acknowledging that AI can generate misleading content, officials noted that the same technology—if used responsibly—can strengthen fact-checking and help counter false narratives. Senior journalist Pradip Phanjoubam encouraged reporters to adapt to technological change, stressing that flexibility and continuous learning would be essential as the media landscape continues to evolve. The event also recognised excellence in journalism. Seven journalists were honoured with the Manipur State Journalist Awards 2025 in categories ranging from science and technology to arts and culture, sports, women and children, parliamentary affairs and public health. The Best Editor Award, given for contributions towards national integration and communal harmony, was also presented
