Manipur pays glorious tribute to 1891 war heroes on Patriots’ Day

Manipur came together on Wednesday to honour the valiant warriors of the historic Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, observing Patriots’ Day with solemn ceremonies and heartfelt tributes. The commemorations, led by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, reflected the state’s deep respect for those who laid down their lives defending its sovereignty.Governor Bhalla, accompanied by the First Lady, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Advisor, Director General of Police, and senior civil and police officials, began the day by paying floral tributes at Heecham Yaicham Pat, Moirangkhom, and Thangal Temple, Palace Compound. Later in the afternoon, the dignitaries gathered at Kangla Uttra for a wreath-laying ceremony, honouring the memory of fallen heroes.

One of the most poignant moments came at the Shaheed Minar, where the Governor, MLAs, and senior officers joined in a Guard of Honour and gun salute by contingents of the Manipur Rifles. Floral offerings were also made at the memorial stone dedicated to exiled martyrs of the 1891 war. In his address, Governor Bhalla paid homage to legendary figures such as Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, and Paona Brajabashi, as well as countless unsung heroes who displayed extraordinary courage against British colonial forces. “Patriots’ Day is not just about remembering the past—it is about living the ideals our heroes fought for,” he said, urging citizens to preserve unity as the state’s strongest defence and harness the energy of youth for positive change.

Reflecting on Manipur’s present-day challenges, the Governor stressed that the sacrifices of the past should serve as a guiding light for the future. He reiterated the government’s resolve to work hand in hand with the Centre and local communities to restore peace, foster development, and promote inclusive growth. Chief Secretary Dr. Goel echoed these sentiments, describing the Anglo-Manipur War as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Manipuri warriors. He urged the youth to uphold courage, integrity, and unity while contributing to the state’s progress.
