In a significant operation on November 28, Manipur Police apprehended three active members of the proscribed group KCP (PWG) for alleged involvement in extortion and possession of illegal arms. The suspects were identified as Chongtham Shyamchandra Singh (23) from Imphal West, and Maibam Suraj Khan (32) and Boghimayum Sahid Khan (30) from Imphal East. Recovered items included three 5.56 mm INSAS live rounds, an empty .32 ammunition case, three mobile phones, and a wallet.
In a related development, the police arrested Chongtham Thoicha alias Romeo Meitei (20) from Kiyam Mamang Leikai under Patsoi Police Station, Imphal West. He is accused of involvement in the arson and destruction of properties owned by elected representatives on November 16. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has asserted the government’s right to curtail the term of village councils (VCs), citing constitutional provisions and administrative needs. Speaking at a meeting in Lunglei on Thursday, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader confirmed that preparations are underway to conduct VC elections in February 2025.
“The current term of the VCs was extended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and it is the government’s prerogative to curtail or extend their tenure as required,” Lalduhoma said, noting similar decisions in the past. Local Administration Minister C Lalsawivunga, on November 25, announced the six-month reduction in the tenure of VCs, excluding those in the three autonomous district council areas in southern Mizoram. The move, he explained, aims to ensure effective fund management and address the pandemic-related extensions. According to a recent notification, the curtailed terms will now end on February 19, 2025. The government believes this adjustment aligns with the state’s administrative and developmental priorities.
