Manipur Police nab 4 insurgents linked to extortion, arms trade

Security forces in Manipur have intensified counter-insurgency efforts, leading to the arrest of four members of the Chin Kuki Mizo Army (CKMA), a non-SoO (Suspension of Operations) insurgent outfit. The arrests, part of a larger state-wide crackdown on extortion and illegal arms trade, mark a significant escalation in operations targeting militant activities in sensitive hill and valley regions.

On June 3, acting on specific intelligence, police teams launched a cordon and search operation in the vicinity of Kerith village, Rengkai under Churachandpur district. The operation resulted in the arrest of four CKMA operatives: Samuel Kamninhao, Hegun Seimingun, Thangminhou Touthang, and Mangkhohao Touthang. The accused were allegedly involved in intimidating locals, issuing extortion notes, and trading illegal arms. Authorities recovered two live 9 mm rounds and three mobile phones from the arrested individuals.

In a follow-up to this breakthrough, police launched extensive search operations in the Naral Samtak hill area of Wangoo in Kakching district. These raids uncovered a large cache of arms and explosives, including INSAS rifles, SBBL guns, hand grenades, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mortar shells, and advanced tactical and communication equipment.

Further operations conducted in Rashidpur under Jiribam Police Station led to the seizure of additional weaponry. Recovered items included firearms of various calibres, live ammunition, protective gear, and other combat-related accessories. Authorities believe these stashes were intended for use by insurgent groups operating along the border areas and hinterlands.

Manipur Police have also intensified their presence through a widespread network of 111 Nakas and checkpoints spread across both valley and hill districts. While no fresh detentions were made at these checkpoints, security forces remain on high alert to prevent the movement of insurgents and illegal weapons.

“These operations are part of a sustained effort to neutralize underground networks involved in extortion and threats against civilians,” said a senior police official. “Our objective is to restore peace and ensure the safety of all communities.”
