The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has directed that all vehicles operating in Manipur must display registration numbers in Meetei Mayek script by March, warning that non-compliance will invite action from the organization. The directive forms part of MEELAL’s sustained campaign to promote and normalize the use of the indigenous Meetei Mayek script in public domains across the state. As part of the awareness drive, volunteers of the body have begun visiting passenger transport parking hubs and engaging with various transport associations to sensitize vehicle owners about the new requirement and ensure adherence within the stipulated timeframe.
Speaking on the matter, MEELAL spokesperson Sadokpam Tomba Mangang said several transport associations have conveyed their readiness to implement Meetei Mayek number plates. He further appealed to vehicle owners to incorporate Meetei Mayek script not only in registration plates but also in route details and other vehicle markings. The organization has scheduled a review meeting on March 14 to assess compliance. Vehicles found without Meetei Mayek registration numbers after the deadline may face action, the spokesperson cautioned.
