Mega medical camp brings healthcare relief to displaced tribal families in Manipur’s Kangpokpi

A large-scale medical outreach was organised at the Leikop DIET Centre in Kangpokpi district on Friday, providing critical healthcare services to hundreds of internally displaced tribal families. The initiative, conducted as part of the upcoming Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2025, marked a significant step in improving healthcare access for displaced communities in Manipur. The camp was organised by the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Government of Manipur, in partnership with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Kangpokpi, and supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, observed annually on 15 November, honours India’s tribal freedom fighters, including Bhagwan Birsa Munda, and celebrates the enduring contributions of tribal communities to India’s cultural and national identity. This year’s event also coincides with the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

The medical camp offered free consultations, treatment, and medicines to displaced persons sheltering at the facility. A multidisciplinary team of doctors attended to patients, including Dr. Chongnu Haokip (MO i/c PHC Kalapahar), Dr. S. Dimngel (ENT), Dr. J. Touthang (Paediatrics), Dr. Archana Nayak (Obstetrics & Gynaecology, DPR RIMS), and Dr. Angelin Francis T. (General Medicine, DPR RIMS), under the supervision of Dr. Paokai Kipgen, Chief Medical Officer of Kangpokpi. The TRI ensured full logistical support, providing transportation, meals, and refreshments for all participants and beneficiaries. Officials from both the TRI and the District Health Department described the event as a meaningful demonstration of service and solidarity with displaced communities.

The initiative not only extended essential healthcare services to tribal families affected by displacement but also reinforced the spirit of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas—honouring courage, unity, and the legacy of India’s tribal heroes. By addressing urgent health needs and promoting well-being among vulnerable populations, the camp highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive development and social welfare in tribal areas.
