Cough and cold cases increase dramatically with the start of the monsoon season, frequently exacerbating respiratory conditions including asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Certain dietary and lifestyle changes can significantly alleviate chronic ailments, according to health professionals. The need of avoiding foods served at extremely high or low temperatures and including anti-inflammatory foods, particularly those high in omega-3 fatty acids, in one’s regular diet has been emphasized by renowned nutritionist Nmami Agarwal. “What we eat has a big impact on our respiratory health. In a recent Instagram video, Nmami clarified that meals that are extremely hot or cold, such ice cream, chilled yoghurt, or steaming hot soups, might irritate the throat lining and exacerbate a chronic cough. She advises avoiding frozen foods and excessively hot drinks, such as boiling tea or coffee, and instead consuming food at room temperature whenever feasible. “High temperatures can weaken immunity and make coughing more difficult to control,” she said.
In addition to antioxidant-rich meals to fight free radicals, Nmami advises concentrating on omega-3-rich foods like flax seeds, walnuts, salmon, and fish oil for improved lung function and decreased inflammation. “Avoiding food at extreme temperatures and making these minor dietary adjustments can help lessen recurrent coughing during the wet monsoon months,” she continued.
