A shocking video from Manipur has surfaced online, drawing nationwide anger after it showed a group of transgender women being assaulted by several men during Diwali celebrations. The viral clip, widely shared on social media, depicts the victims being forced to stand with their hands raised while they are repeatedly beaten with sticks. The visuals have sparked widespread condemnation, with activists calling the incident an attack on dignity, identity, and basic human rights. According to local accounts, the victims were making short videos to Hindi music as part of Diwali festivities when they were confronted by a group of men who objected to their activity. Despite requests to stop filming, the transgender group allegedly continued, leading to the violent assault captured in the video. The incident has highlighted growing concerns about intolerance and targeted violence against the transgender community in the region.
Among those assaulted was Konjengbam Malemnganba, a prominent figure in Manipur’s cultural landscape. Known for portraying female roles in the state’s traditional Shumang Leela theatre, he is also a respected makeup artist, salon owner, and designer of the traditional Potloi bridal attire. Malemnganba has previously earned recognition for his humanitarian efforts during recent unrest in the state, making the attack even more disturbing for supporters and community members. Transgender rights advocates and public figures reacted strongly, demanding justice and immediate police intervention. Activist Thangjam Santa expressed heartbreak in a social media post, referring to the victims as his “Nupi Manbi sisters.” Actor and activist Bishesh Huirem also condemned the violence, urging authorities to ensure accountability and extend better protection to the transgender community.
Online users expressed solidarity with the victims, describing the attack as a painful reminder of deep-rooted prejudice. Many urged society to embrace empathy and inclusivity, pointing out that celebrations like Diwali symbolize light, compassion, and humanity — values that stand in stark contrast to the assault witnessed. As of now, the identities of the attackers have not been confirmed, and Manipur Police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the case. Community organisations and rights groups are pressing for swift action, saying incidents like this cannot be ignored in a society that aims to uphold equality and justice for all.
