Security forces in Manipur have launched a strong crackdown on extortion, drug trafficking, and other unlawful activities, arresting at least eight individuals in a series of intelligence-based operations conducted across multiple districts in the state.
On May 12, a significant breakthrough came when personnel from Khongjom Police Station in Thoubal district apprehended Narengbam Gobin Singh (38), an active member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group). Singh, hailing from Wangjing Lamding Awang Leikai, was arrested near Dhaka Brick Field along NH-102. Authorities suspect his involvement in extortion and kidnapping activities. A mobile phone and two SIM cards were recovered from him during the operation.
In a separate raid the same day, two more KCP (PWG) operatives—Asheibam Gopen Singh (43) of Andro Makha Leikai and Laishram Sanamacha Leima (45) of Sinam Maning Leikai—were captured from a rented residence in Mantripukhri Mercylane, Imphal East. Their presence in the area had triggered intelligence alerts following reports of threats and extortion attempts.
Security forces also arrested two individuals allegedly involved in the November 2024 mob attack on the RSS office at Haraorou under the Sogolmang Police Station. The suspects—Haobijam Khumarjit (45) and Haobijam Mangangcha Singh alias Naobi (41), both from Yumnam Khunou Awang Leikai—were detained from their home locality.
In a major seizure on May 10 near New Lamka in Churachandpur, three suspects—Minlun Valphei (34), David Nehtinthang (32), and Lunkholal (53)—were intercepted while traveling in a four-wheeler. Security forces discovered 97 soap cases filled with suspected No. 4 heroin weighing approximately 1.164 kg. The consignment is estimated to be worth over ₹11.05 crore in the illicit drug market. The vehicle and three mobile phones were also seized.
On May 11, Manipur Police intensified its special drive to crack down on vehicle thefts and miscreant activity, recovering six stolen or snatched vehicles. As part of the enforcement effort, authorities also removed tinted glasses from 78 vehicles in compliance with state regulations.
