In a gesture symbolizing reconciliation and hope, Anthony Naulak belonging to Paite tribe of Zomi community, on Saturday visited his Meitei mother-in-law in Imphal for the first time since the outbreak of violence in the state on May 3, 2023. After reaching Imphal, Anthony Naulak headed to his wife’s residence at Singjamei Chingamakha, Imphal West and met his mother-in-law, turning into an emotional moment. Anthony said he sought her blessings and expressed hope for lasting peace and harmony in Manipur, which has witnessed prolonged ethnic tensions since the eruption of the conflict. Speaking to media persons, Anthony stated that following the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, he and his wife, Okram Jaya, who belongs to the Meitei community, fled to Delhi for safety. The couple, along with their daughter, stayed in the national capital for some time before Anthony later shifted to Churachandpur to assess the condition of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
He informed that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the High Court seeking adequate food and essential supplies for IDPs. The matter is currently under hearing in the Supreme Court. During interaction with media persons, Anthony stated that the ongoing conflict between the two communities has severely affected innocent civilians, many of whom are now residing in relief camps. He emphasized that although displaced families wish to return home, government intervention and a secure environment are necessary to ensure their safe return. With a new government now in place in the state, Anthony expressed his desire to meet the Chief Minister to apprise him of the various challenges confronting IDPs and urge the authorities to take necessary measures for their rehabilitation and security.
