Police in Manipur confiscate 2.4 kilogram of suspected brown sugar; two held

In a major setback to drug trafficking networks in the area, security officers in Manipur arrested two people after seizing over 2.4 kilograms of suspected brown sugar during a routine vehicle check. At the Biisho bridge under the Maram Police Station in Senapati District, the contraband was found hidden inside the body panels of a Bolero pickup truck. During their search, officers discovered 220 soap containers concealed inside the vehicle’s framework that contained the suspected drug.

The driver of the car, Mayarngam Khokyar, 45, of Kalhang village in Ukhrul District, and his passenger, Nima Sherpa, 34, of Sadim Naga village in Senapati District, were both arrested in relation to the seizure. In the northeastern states, brown sugar—a primitive version of heroin—has grown in popularity, which has led to an increase in addiction rates and related criminal activity. The substantial amount found indicates that this was probably not for individual use but rather a component of a wider distribution network.

According to police sources, more investigation is being conducted to determine the contraband’s origin and planned destination as well as to find additional possible trafficking partners.
