Congress MP A. Bimol Akoijam on Thursday said recent incidents of fresh violence in Manipur are being instigated by radical fringe groups opposed to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis. He stressed that the unrest is not widespread but confined to certain pockets.
Reacting to the latest developments, Akoijam said such elements have been active since the beginning of the ethnic conflict and continue to hinder efforts to restore normalcy in the state.
“There are radical elements who are against a peaceful solution. This is how the violence began. It is not widespread but limited to specific pockets. These are fringe elements, and it is unfortunate,” he said.
The Congress leader emphasised that existing grievances must be addressed through dialogue and constitutional means. “Concerns should be resolved peacefully. No one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he added.
Akoijam also urged the Government of India to take a sincere and transparent approach towards resolving the Manipur crisis. He said the Centre must ensure that the state government receives adequate institutional support and an enabling environment to function effectively.
Referring to the recent change in leadership in Manipur, he said the new Chief Minister must uphold constitutional values. “The Government of India must act honestly and ensure that the state government has the necessary conditions to function properly. The new Chief Minister should have the constitutional morality to defend the spirit and autonomy of the Constitution,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Manipur Minister Govindas Konthoujam acknowledged disturbances in Churachandpur but maintained that the situation remains under control.
“As of now, you cannot say the situation is completely normal because there are some disturbances. However, the situation is under control,” Konthoujam said. He added that while some groups are expressing discontent, security forces remain deployed and no major violence was reported recently. “Gradually, things will improve,” he said.
Manipur has witnessed sporadic incidents of unrest in recent weeks even as security forces continue to maintain a strong presence in sensitive areas. Political leaders across parties have increasingly called for restraint, dialogue, and adherence to constitutional processes to ensure lasting peace in the state.
