Rocket Attack in Manipur Kills Two Children, Sparks Protests

Fresh violence erupted in Manipur following a suspected rocket launcher attack in Bishnupur district that killed two children—a 5-year-old boy and a 5-month-old girl. The incident occurred around 1 am, with a projectile believed to be fired by Kuki militants hitting a residential area in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai. The children’s mother suffered critical injuries and was transported to Raj Medicity Hospital, where it was confirmed that both children were dead upon arrival.

The community reacted with immediate protests in Moirang, where residents expressed outrage, setting fire to two oil tankers and a goods-laden truck. Demonstrators also surrounded the Moirang Police Station, demanding prompt action against the attackers, and intensified their protests by burning tires and debris.

In response to the unrest, security forces were deployed in significant numbers to manage the situation, which remains tense and under close surveillance. Local MLA Thokchom Santi Singh condemned the killings as “nothing less than terrorism,” offering condolences to the victims’ family and calling for strict action against the perpetrators. Investigations are currently ongoing, and no official confirmation of those responsible has been released.
