Save Koirengei: Protesters Demand Protection of Historic WWII Airfield in Manipur

Hundreds of citizens gathered at the historic Koirengei Airfield in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Sunday, urging authorities to preserve the site and protect it from ongoing construction activities.
The demonstration was organized by the Campaign for Protection and Preservation of Koirengei Airfield (CPPKAF). Protesters assembled at the airfield carrying placards highlighting the historical significance of the site and calling for its conservation. Messages on the placards read, “Preserving Koirengei is preserving the history of the Indian Armed Forces,” “History cannot be rebuilt once destroyed,” and “Honor the past, save Koirengei Airfield.”
Public concern has intensified following reports that more than 300 acres of land have been donated to the Assam Rifles and another 100 acres to the Border Security Force (BSF) near the airfield. Many residents fear that the development of new structures by security forces could permanently alter or damage the historic location.
Shanta Nahakpa, convener of CPPKAF, said the public is not opposed to development but wants the site to be preserved due to its historic importance. She suggested that instead of permanent occupation by central forces, the airfield should be converted into a heritage or tourism site that can commemorate its wartime legacy.
The Koirengei Airfield holds a prominent place in World War II history. It was constructed by American engineers during the war for Allied forces to counter the Japanese advance in the region. At the time, Manipur had no airport infrastructure, and the airfield played a crucial role in supporting military operations during the conflict.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to intervene and safeguard the site. Describing the airfield as a priceless World War II heritage landmark, Singh said any alteration to the area could erase an important chapter of military history.
Protesters urged the government to recognize the airfield as a protected heritage site and develop it as a historical and tourism destination while preserving its original character.
