Startup and MSME patent filings upsurge 310% in 5 years

New Delhi, Patent filings by startups and MSMEs have increased by 310 percent in the last 5 years, from 1,492 in 2018-19 to 6,120 in 2023-24, an official said on Thursday.
N Ramachander, Joint Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, further informed that more than 2.4 million students and teachers across India have been educated about IP rights in about three years through the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission launched in 2021.
Addressing an event organised by Assocham, he informed that there has been a 116 percent increase in the filing of patent applications in India, from 42,763 in 2014-15 to 92,172 in 2023-24.
N Ramachander said, “Patent grants have increased significantly by 1,624 per cent, from 5,978 in 2014-15 to 103,057 in 2023-24. India has seen the biggest shift in resident and non-resident distribution in the last 10 years, with the share of resident filers increasing from 24.8 percent in 2013 to 60 percent in 2024.”
India’s IPR policy has provided a comprehensive framework for IP creation, protection and commercialisation, but continuous evaluation and updating is necessary. The Patent Rules 2024 have been amended to further simplify and streamline the process and create a conducive environment for innovation and protection of intellectual property (IP) in India.
In addition, certification of inventorship has been introduced to enhance the patenting ecosystem in India by formally recognising the efforts of inventors in patented inventions. The frequency of filing ‘Executive Statement of Patent’ has been reduced from once a year to once every three years in order to reduce the administrative burden on applicants and to reduce compliance cost.
