The Transport Minister of Tripura pushes for regulation of social media use

Sushanta Chowdhury, Tripura’s minister of transportation, stated that social media should be limited for the good of the nation, pointing out that liberties without reasonable restrictions can have fatal consequences. The Minister gave the example, saying, “I should be very careful about my speed when I am driving a car.” Social media is causing mental health problems including depression and anxiety in certain affluent countries, according to Chowdhury, who also stated, “Even many of the European countries are now divided on the use of social media.”

According to the Minister, social media is also elevating human connections to a manufactured level. The Minister was speaking at the Advocate Dilip Sarkar Memorial Foundation’s inaugural Debate 2024 event. “Although social media is being seen as a medium of communication, we often see it being used as a tool to incite trouble and violence,” stated Tripura High Court Judge Arindam Lodh during his remarks.

The chairperson of the Tripura Human Rights Commission, retired justice SC Das, was one of the speakers at the ceremony. Prominent speakers including author Chandril Bhattacharjee, RJ Agnijit Sen, Dr. Basab Ghosh, professor Sayak Mukherjee, advocate Rajashree Purakayastha, Dr. Nabarun Ghosh, and Dr. Ripan Bhattacharjee from NLU Tripura participated in the thought-provoking debate show, which was moderated by Dr. Kunal Sarkar.
