Two civilians were injured in separate firing incidents reported along the Ukhrul–Kangpokpi fringe in Manipur on March 21, triggering fresh concerns over security in the region.
According to statements issued by the Ihang-Bungpi Working Committee and the Kuki CSO Working Committee (Ukhrul), suspected Tangkhul militants allegedly carried out two attacks—first in the early hours at Shangkai village, and later along the Leplen–Tingpibung road.
The more serious incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., when an auto-rickshaw travelling between Tingpibung and Leplen villages reportedly came under automatic gunfire from the direction of Sanakeithel. The vehicle was hit while in motion and later crashed. Two individuals were injured, including a woman who sustained a gunshot wound to her waist. Both are said to be in critical condition, with further updates awaited from medical authorities.
Earlier, at approximately 5:15 a.m., suspected militants allegedly fired three to four rounds towards Shangkai village, causing panic among residents. No casualties were reported in that incident.
The Ihang-Bungpi Working Committee described the 9:30 a.m. attack as a deliberate act targeting unarmed civilians. It also raised concerns over the alleged inaction of personnel from the 4th Mahar Regiment stationed at Sinakeithel during the incident, questioning why security forces failed to intervene and calling it a serious dereliction of duty.
The Committee demanded immediate countermeasures against militant elements operating from the Sinakeithel area, a formal inquiry into the alleged inaction, dismantling of unauthorised militant bunkers along civilian routes, and assurance of safe passage for commuters on the Leplen–Tingpibung road. It warned that failure to take visible action within 48 hours would be taken seriously.
Meanwhile, the Kuki CSO Working Committee (Ukhrul) condemned the incidents, noting that they occurred at a time when the community was already mourning the deaths of Thenkhing Baite and Thangboimang Lunkim. The Committee stated that it had extended cooperation to authorities and lifted the shutdown on March 20 following assurances.
It urged authorities to identify those responsible and take prompt legal action to prevent further escalation.
