49-year-old RPF/PLA operative arrested in Manipur’s Thoubal, mobile phone seized

Security forces in Manipur have arrested an active operative of the banned Revolutionary People’s Front/People’s Liberation Army (RPF/PLA) during a counter-insurgency operation in Thoubal district. The arrest, made on September 16, is being seen as a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb militant activities in the state. The arrested man has been identified as Soibam Kanta Meitei alias Ratan (49), a resident of Ningel Mamang Leikai. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team of security forces carried out a raid near his residence under the jurisdiction of Nongpok Sekmai Police Station, leading to his swift arrest.

During the operation, security personnel recovered a mobile phone and SIM card from his possession. Officials believe that the seized items may contain vital digital evidence, including communication records and possible contacts with other operatives of the banned outfit. The devices are being closely examined by investigators for leads that could help uncover wider militant networks. Authorities have described the arrest as part of the larger security crackdown on insurgent groups that continue to pose a threat to peace and stability in Manipur.

The RPF/PLA, which has been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), has a long history of armed insurgency and has been linked to extortion, recruitment, and violent attacks in the state.“Neutralising the activities of such elements is crucial for ensuring peace in Manipur. The arrest is a significant achievement and will help security agencies trace his links with other cadres of the RPF/PLA,” a senior security official said.
