Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday chaired an all-party meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to discuss issues surrounding the implementation and updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. The meeting was attended by senior leaders of the BJP and Congress, along with representatives of civil society organisations. According to an official statement, the discussions covered several key issues concerning Manipur, with particular emphasis on updating the NRC to protect the state’s indigenous identity, security and future. Chief Minister Singh heard the concerns, views and suggestions of representatives from different political parties and civil society groups, following which the meeting concluded on a positive note, officials said. In a social media post, Singh said the meeting also considered various issues affecting the state, including the need to update the NRC “in the interest of the people” of Manipur. The meeting highlights the government’s effort to engage political parties and civil society stakeholders in discussions on an issue that has significant implications for citizenship, identity and security in the state.
