AMC Race Intensifies as SBI Funds Lists With Strong Investor Interest

SBI Funds Management has entered the list of publicly traded asset management companies (AMCs) on Dalal Street, giving investors another opportunity to participate in India’s rapidly expanding mutual fund industry. The listing has intensified competition among leading AMCs, including HDFC AMC and ICICI Prudential AMC.

Shares of SBI Funds Management debuted on July 21 at ₹613.30 apiece, marking a 7 per cent premium over its issue price of ₹574. Although the listing gain was lower than market expectations, the company’s initial public offering (IPO) received overwhelming investor interest. The ₹9,812.91 crore issue attracted bids for more than 5,189 million shares against 124.56 million shares offered.

With SBI Funds now available as a listed investment option, investors are evaluating whether it offers a better opportunity compared with established players such as HDFC AMC and ICICI Prudential AMC.

Market experts believe the long-term growth potential of the asset management sector remains strong as financialisation of savings continues to increase in India. Kranthi Bathini of Wealthmills Securities said leading AMCs benefit from strong distribution networks, established brands and decades of industry experience.

SBI AMC, ICICI Prudential AMC and HDFC AMC together account for around 40 per cent of the overall mutual fund market share. Analysts expect these companies to benefit from rising retail participation, increasing assets under management (AUM) and continued growth in India’s equity markets. The entry of SBI Funds into the listed AMC segment has provided investors with more choices while highlighting the growing importance of asset management companies in India’s financial landscape.
