Arms cache recovered, students clash with Police in escalating protests

Amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition during search operations across hill and valley districts. On September 9, 2024, protests by student groups erupted outside the Raj Bhavan and the Thoubal District Police Headquarters, resulting in violent clashes with law enforcement.

In Imphal, defying prohibitory orders, several student groups gathered near the Raj Bhavan. Attempts by the police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to disperse the crowd peacefully failed as the protesters resorted to stone-pelting and hurling plastic bottles. Police used minimal force to control the mob under the guidance of the Executive Magistrate.

Later, in Thoubal District, a large group of students clashed with security forces, leading to live gunfire being exchanged. A police officer sustained a gunshot wound, and damage to public property, including a vehicle and an ambulance, was reported. Security personnel resorted to tear gas and blank firing to restore order.

Manipur Police have urged the public to refrain from violence and warned that some groups may be exploiting the protests for ulterior motives. Search operations in sensitive areas led to the recovery of arms, including a 12-bore gun and ammunition in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts. Authorities continue to secure key national highways to ensure the smooth movement of essential goods, with over 100 checkpoints now in place.
