A three-day special cataract surgery drive for senior citizens was successfully held at the District Hospital, Tamenglong from February 26 to 28. The camp was organised in collaboration with the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, the District Administration and the District Health Society, Tamenglong.
The surgical camp was conducted under the supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr. Franchis Daimei. The local surgical team was led by Dr. R. Rangla, District Nodal Officer (DNO), NPCB, supported by an expert team from JNIMS, Imphal headed by Dr. Anthony Kamson and Dr. Jenifer Nane.
A total of 41 patients were examined and treated during the drive. Of these, 31 were diagnosed with cataract, 8 had cataract complicated by other eye conditions, and 2 patients were found to have hepatitis and were managed according to protocol.
Pre-operative screening for the camp was carried out at peripheral health centres to identify and refer eligible patients. Screening sessions were held at the Primary Health Centre, Oinamlong on 19 February; the Community Health Centre, Tamei on 21 February; and the Primary Health Centre, Tousem on 24 February. More than 500 spectacle were distributed to the patients said one of the officials.
Officials said the initiative aimed to improve access to sight-restoring surgery for elderly residents in remote parts of the district and to strengthen coordination between district health services and specialist teams from the state medical institute. Further follow-up and post-operative care arrangements were put in place for operated patients.
