COCOMI expresses concern over recent violence, urges immediate action to protect civilians in Manipur

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of violence in Tengnoupal district and parts of Ukhrul district, stating that the events reflect continuing instability and growing insecurity in the state. In a press statement issued on February 10, 2026, the organisation said the attacks in villages such as Litian and others should not be viewed as isolated incidents but as part of a broader pattern of conflict that has affected the people of Manipur for the past several years.

COCOMI stated that the latest violence has resulted in casualties, displacement of families, and renewed fear among residents of affected areas. According to the organisation, repeated incidents of unrest have caused severe damage to the social fabric of the state, with communities facing loss of homes, livelihoods, and a sense of safety. The committee expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as inadequate preventive measures and delayed responses to protect civilians and property during such incidents.

The organisation also raised concerns regarding the functioning of security arrangements in sensitive regions, stating that stronger and more effective steps are necessary to prevent further escalation. It called for clear and accountable measures to ensure the safety of residents, including improved coordination among administrative authorities, security agencies, and local community leaders. COCOMI stressed that restoring public confidence requires prompt action, transparency in investigations, and firm enforcement of the law against those responsible for violence.

Referring to the broader situation in Manipur, the committee said the continuing tensions have led to internal displacement, economic hardship, and psychological stress for many families. It noted that prolonged instability has affected education, employment, and normal daily life in several districts. Community organisations and civil society groups, it said, must work together to promote dialogue, reduce mistrust among communities, and prevent further polarisation.

COCOMI also urged both the state and central authorities to take immediate steps to stabilise the situation, including strengthening humanitarian support for affected families, ensuring proper relief and rehabilitation measures, and improving monitoring systems in vulnerable areas. The committee emphasised that lasting peace can only be achieved through consistent protection of civilians, impartial enforcement of the law, and sustained efforts to rebuild trust between communities.
