Senior leaders of the Manipur Congress on Monday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi to discuss the continuing unrest in the state and the party’s preparations for the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections.
The meeting was attended by Manipur Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Keisham Meghachandra, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president O Ibobi Singh, AICC Manipur in-charge Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and other senior party leaders.
Following the meeting, Keisham Meghachandra said discussions focused on the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, the continuing violence and insecurity, and the inability to restore lasting peace and normalcy in the state.
He stated that the leaders also reviewed the Congress party’s organisational preparedness and electoral strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Emphasising the party’s priorities, Meghachandra said the people of Manipur deserve peace, security, stability, and accountable governance. He added that restoring lasting peace and securing the future of the state remain the Congress party’s foremost concerns.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May 2023. Clashes between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki community have resulted in hundreds of deaths, widespread displacement, and prolonged instability. More recently, reports of clashes involving Kuki and Naga groups have also emerged.
The Congress leaders’ meeting was held a day after they participated in an INDIA bloc rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. Party sources said Manipur Congress leaders raised slogans of “Save Manipur” during the protest programme.
At the rally, opposition leaders criticised the BJP over alleged electoral irregularities and voter roll revisions, accusing the ruling party of securing power at the Centre and in several states through a “stolen mandate”.
