CPI(M) Leader Brinda Karat Calls Death of Kuki Gang Rape Victim an Indictment of Politics of Hate

The death of a gang rape survivor from the Kuki community in Manipur has sparked significant condemnation from CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, who described the incident as a stark reflection of the prevailing politics of hate and the inadequacies within the judicial system. Karat emphasized that the victim, who died without witnessing justice, embodies the failures of a political environment that has, according to her, fostered animosity towards the Christian Kuki community, thereby exacerbating societal divisions in Manipur. She articulated that the victim became a target of this hatred, which allowed her abductors to commit heinous acts of violence with a sense of impunity, leaving her severely injured and abandoned. The young woman, who was just 20 years old, faced numerous health challenges after her assault, yet continued to seek justice for two years. Karat lamented over her passing, highlighting the tragedy that a young woman could die without receiving the justice she rightfully deserved, and she extended her condolences to the victim’s grieving family. The survivor was sexually assaulted following her kidnapping amid the unrest that erupted during the Meitei-Kuki ethnic clashes in May 2023, and she ultimately succumbed to her injuries in Apollo Hospital in Guwahati on January 10, 2026.
