Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said the Northeast is fast emerging as a key economic growth region for India. He stressed that Assam may not be a large state with thousands of investment proposals, but it treats every investor as a “VIP investor” and gives focused attention to each opportunity.
Sarma credited the Central Government’s sustained policy support for unlocking the region’s long-standing potential. Highlighting development progress, he noted that cement consumption in the Northeast is rising nearly 20% annually, signalling rapid infrastructure expansion. He also pointed to major hydrocarbon potential being explored in Arunachal Pradesh and said Assam is positioning itself to contribute to India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.
The Chief Minister added that Assam has become a power-surplus state, boosting its appeal for industries. He further revealed that rare earth reserves may soon be discovered in the Northeast, with advanced geological surveys underway at multiple sites. He urged investors to view the Northeast as India’s next major investment frontier.
