Explosion Rocks Wangjing New Market Area

A hand grenade attack occurred on February 22, around 10:40 pm, targeting a betel leaf shop owned by Ningthoujam Roben in Wangjing Heirok crossing, Thoubal district. Although there were no casualties due to the late hour, the explosion damaged the shop’s shutter and roofing sheets as well as an adjacent shop’s door. Roben, who has previously faced threats and attacks, claimed that this was not an isolated incident; he had been targeted before by unidentified individuals demanding ₹5 lakh and had received threats linked to allegations of connections with Kuki narco-terrorists. Following these events, a protest was organized by The Wangjing Lamding keithel shopkeepers’ development association, condemning the attack and calling for permanent security deployment in the area. They articulated that such acts threaten not just individuals but the wider community’s peace and commerce, highlighting a critical need for regular police presence and active patrolling to ensure safety. The association’s memorandum urged the immediate stationing of police and commandos, along with an expedited investigation to bring the culprits to justice, emphasizing the detrimental impact of insecurity on local trade.
