Imphal set to host Fit India Carnival 2026 from March 8

Imphal will host the Fit India Carnival 2026 from March 8 to March 10, bringing together citizens, students and fitness enthusiasts in a three-day celebration of health, wellness and community engagement. The programme will begin with a Mega Sundays on Cycle rally on March 8 at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, coinciding with International Women’s Day, followed by a two-day carnival at Hapta Kangjeibung, Palace Compound. The event is being organised under the nationwide Fit India Movement, launched by the Prime Minister on August 29, 2019, with the aim of making fitness an integral part of daily life and encouraging behavioural change towards a healthier and more physically active society.

The opening cycle rally will encourage greater participation of women and youth in cycling and outdoor activities. The carnival on March 9 and March 10 will feature interactive sessions including Zumba, yoga workshops, structured exercise routines and fitness challenges led by certified trainers and experts. Traditional games and regionally inspired activities will also be organised to ensure inclusive participation across age groups.

Fit India Carnivals have been organised in several cities across the country, drawing large public engagement. The Northeast region has emerged as a strong contributor to the movement, with the recent carnival in Guwahati witnessing enthusiastic participation from citizens and students.

The event will also showcase cultural presentations celebrating the diversity of the Northeast, along with music and entertainment segments to create a festive environment.

Officials from the Sports Authority of India, North-East Regional Centre (SAI NERC), Imphal, said the carnival aims to bring communities together through the shared spirit of fitness and well-being. “Beginning with the Mega Sundays on Cycle rally on International Women’s Day and followed by two days of carnival activities, the event seeks to inspire people across Manipur to adopt active and healthy lifestyles,” the official said.

In Imphal, local businesses including sports equipment shops, food vendors and small retailers are expected to witness increased activity during the event period as large crowds gather in the city for the carnival. Traders believe such public events often drive short-term demand for fitness gear, refreshments and local services, contributing to a temporary boost in the city’s weekend commercial activity. The carnival is expected to attract students, families and members of the wider community, further strengthening the reach of the Fit India Movement across Manipur and the Northeast region.
