The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Vungzagin Valte, MLA of Thanlon Assembly Constituency, who died on February 21 after a lengthy struggle following severe injuries sustained during a mob attack in May 2023. The attack occurred after Valte met with then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, resulting in the death of his driver and leaving Valte with significant physical and emotional trauma. His death highlights the ongoing atrocities faced by the Kuki-Zo community and the insecurity prevalent in Meitei-dominated areas. The ITLF emphasized that even a sitting MLA being targeted reflects a broader breakdown of safety and trust, reinforcing the need for a formal separate administration for the Kuki-Zo. Valte’s resilience in advocating for his people during times of extreme adversity has solidified him as a martyr, embodying the struggle for justice and security. The ITLF offered condolences to his family and the constituents, expressing hope that his legacy will bolster collective resolve and unity among the Kuki-Zo people.
