KCP (PWG) cadres held; arms cache seized across districts in Manipur

Manipur Police and allied security forces have launched intensified operations across sensitive zones of the state, resulting in the arrest of multiple cadres of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) [KCP (PWG)] and the recovery of a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives. The coordinated crackdown, aimed at dismantling insurgent networks and preventing unrest, covered several districts and involved both combing operations and targeted raids. The most notable haul came from the Wangoo Tarung Mamang Ching area under Wangoo Police Station in Kakching District on June 27. Acting on credible intelligence, security personnel carried out a focused search and recovered a large cache of war-like stores. The list of items includes one INSAS rifle (without magazine), one modified AK-56 rifle with a magazine, one bolt action single barrel gun, and another single barrel gun. Additionally, a .32 pistol with magazine, an INSAS LMG magazine, and a 51 mm mortar bomb with its cover were also found.

Among the more alarming items discovered were three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) weighing approximately 1 kg in total, a live .32 round, 20 empty INSAS ammunition cases, and three tear smoke shells labeled LR -135 MTR. Authorities also found tactical gear such as a Baofeng communication handset with a charger, camouflage clothing, three pairs of tactical boots, a raincoat, and a bulletproof jacket without a protective plate. These items suggest preparation for combat or coordinated militant activity. On the same day, another major operation was conducted in Torbung Sabal Mamang Leikai, under the jurisdiction of Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station in Bishnupur District. This search led to the recovery of a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) with one magazine and five live rounds, a modified AK rifle with an empty magazine, and three single-barrel guns.Meanwhile, a separate operation carried out on June 26 in the Kameng Sabal area along the IVR road under Lamsang Police Station in Imphal West yielded three pistols bearing the marking “Made in Burma,” three magazines, and three hand grenades of the 36 HE type. These items further point to the insurgent group’s access to cross-border arms and potential plans for targeted violence.

The clampdown also led to the arrest of several active members of the KCP (PWG), known for its extortion, threats, and insurgency-related activities. On June 26, police apprehended Nongmeikapam Jilish Meitei, aged 29, from Chingarel Tejpur under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East. He was reportedly engaged in collecting extortion money from private firms and members of the public to finance the group’s operations.Later that same day, two more active operatives—Laishram Suraj Singh alias Ibungo (33) of Naoremthong and Sapam alias Kshetrimayum alias Ashangbi Devi (34) of Khurai Sajor Leikai—were arrested from Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East. Security forces recovered one scooter, ₹10,000 in cash suspected to be from extortion, one AADHAR card, and two mobile phones during the operation. A follow-up raid on June 27 led to the arrest of three additional cadres in Thangmeiband Thingel Leikai, near the local community hall under Imphal Police Station. The arrested individuals were identified as Aheibam Johnson Singh alias Khonthang (27) of Takyel Kolom Leikai, Ningthoujam Scolia Devi alias Chaoba (25) of Tairenpokpi Mayai Leikai, and Salam Binita Devi alias Bemma alias Tamna (22) of Ningthoukhong Mamang Leikai. Three mobile phones and one wallet were seized from them.
