The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, has condemned an alleged arson attack on Tokpa Naga village in Kangpokpi district, claiming that armed miscreants entered the village on Tuesday night and set fire to around 10 houses and a church.
In a statement, the council said the incident took place at around 9.30 pm on August 11 in the Champai area of Kangpokpi district. It alleged that the attackers deliberately targeted civilian homes, residential properties and a place of worship, describing the incident as a “grave and reprehensible act of violence”.
The council also raised questions over the security arrangements in the area, saying security personnel were reportedly stationed only a few metres from the affected locality. It pointed out that the area had been identified as a sensitive red-zone area and questioned how the alleged attack could take place despite the presence of security personnel nearby.
The Liangmai Naga Council said the reported incident raised concerns about the preparedness and accountability of the security forces. It sought an inquiry into the conduct of personnel deployed in the vicinity and said any negligence or dereliction of duty should be examined.
The council demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the alleged attack. It also called for a swift, impartial and time-bound investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those involved.
The organisation further urged the authorities to strengthen security in the affected area and take immediate steps to protect civilians from possible further attacks.
It also sought adequate relief, rehabilitation and compensation for families whose houses and properties were allegedly destroyed in the incident.
The council appealed to the government and security authorities to act urgently and ensure that tribal communities are protected. It said those responsible for attacks on civilians must be identified and brought to justice.
