The Budget Session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly will begin on March 9, with the state government expected to present the annual budget during the proceedings. Officials said the session will start at 11 am, although the final date of the session has not yet been announced.According to an official notification issued earlier this week, the session is likely to continue for at least a week, during which several important legislative matters will be taken up. The presentation of the state budget for the upcoming financial year will be one of the key highlights of the session. The upcoming session will be significant as it will be among the first full sessions of the Assembly after the formation of the new government in the state. Earlier, a one-day session of the Assembly was held on February 5 soon after the formation of a popular government in Manipur.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh took oath as the Chief Minister on February 4, a day after the revocation of President’s Rule in the state. The short Assembly sitting held the next day marked the beginning of legislative proceedings under the new government.Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh had indicated on February 28 that the Budget Session would be convened after the festival of Holi.In preparation for the Assembly session, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel has directed all government departments to submit their Annual Administrative Reports for the year 2025-26. These reports will be placed before the House during the budget session.
The session comes at a time when Manipur continues to face the impact of ethnic tensions that began on May 3, 2023, following clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The violence started after a tribal solidarity march was organised in the hill districts to protest the demand of the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status.
