Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Praveen Kumar convened a high-level security meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Babupara to review the state’s deteriorating law and order situation following a deadly surge in ethnic violence. Accompanied by BSF Eastern Command Additional Director General Sumit Sharan and Mizoram and Cachar Frontier Headquarters Inspector General Ravi Kant, the top border force officials deliberated on immediate security measures, strategic border management, and preparations for the upcoming BSF Raising Day celebrations. In a social media post following the meeting, Chief Minister Singh commended the BSF for its dedicated service and crucial contributions toward restoring peace, protecting local populations, and ensuring robust cross-border surveillance. The high-level meeting was triggered by a fresh escalation of clashes over the weekend, during which separate firing incidents across three hill districts left at least nine people dead. The latest fatalities reflect a disturbing expansion of conflict, with more than 50 people reported killed and dozens of residential structures torched since February in clashes between Kuki and Naga communities. This surge builds upon the wider ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei community residing in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribes inhabiting the surrounding hill regions—a crisis that has claimed over 300 lives, left 49 individuals missing, displaced thousands of residents, and severely disrupted normal life across the state despite continuous state and central peace initiatives.
