Manipur Police crack down on militants and liquor trafficking in statewide operations

In a sweeping series of operations across Manipur, police and security forces have arrested five individuals, including active members of banned militant outfits, and confiscated a large quantity of illegal liquor. These efforts are seen as a strong step toward restoring law and order and curbing unlawful activities that have long plagued the state. In Imphal West, police apprehended a 49-year-old man identified as Nanao Singh, a member of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), from his residence at Loitang Khullen Maning Leikai. He was allegedly involved in extorting money from government employees. Two mobile phones were seized from his possession. In a parallel operation in Imphal East district, security personnel arrested another militant, Sapam Sagar Singh (30), linked to the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK-Pro). The arrest was made near Sagolmang Bazar, and one mobile phone was recovered.

Meanwhile, in Kangpokpi district, troops on patrol along National Highway-02 between T Khullen and Koubru Laikha intercepted a group suspected of extorting truck drivers. Although most of the individuals fled, one person—Lunminthang Guite (27) of Khamenlok, Saikul—was caught. Authorities recovered a smartphone and ₹25,000 in cash from him. In addition to the militant crackdown, security agencies launched extensive raids to stop the illegal sale of liquor. In Tengnoupal district’s Moreh town, police seized a large cache of contraband liquor during raids on local shops. The haul included 120 bottles of whiskey, 41 bottles of rum, 24 bottles of wine, 17 bottles of vodka, and several beer bottles.

A separate drive in Churachandpur district yielded another massive seizure. During night-time raids in various parts of the town, security teams confiscated 267 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) whiskey, 72 bottles of IMFL rum, and 160 cans of beer. The seized liquor was destroyed in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, Excise Department officials, and media representatives. Additionally, on April 7, security forces nabbed Ningombam Ajitkumar Singh (49), an active cadre of the United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), from Pebiya Pandit Leikai near Meira Shang in Imphal East. He was allegedly involved in extorting money from the general public, as well as from private schools and colleges in the Imphal area. A scooter and a mobile phone were also recovered from him.
