Nongthombam Rita, a 45-year-old resident of Top Makha Leikai in Imphal, is revolutionizing the culinary scene in Manipur through her food enterprise, Leimalen Foods. This business, which initially started as a tea and snack stall, now provides employment to approximately 20 local women who craft traditional snacks while adhering to contemporary packaging and hygiene standards. The standout product, Chakhao Gulla, made from the indigenous black rice of Manipur, has become increasingly popular throughout the state. This initiative not only safeguards Manipur’s culinary traditions but also generates economic opportunities for women within the community. During festive periods, the demand for Rita’s offerings escalates, leading to rapid depletion of stock on shelves across the state. With backing from local organizations and a well-defined vision, Rita aspires to extend the flavors of Manipur beyond its borders, exemplifying resilience, entrepreneurship, and community-focused development.
