NFDB launches fisherman card initiative in Champu Khangpok Floating Village

Champu Khangpok, a floating town on Manipur’s scenic Loktak Lake, undertook an ambitious attempt to mainstream the traditional fishermen into the contemporary financial system. The Loktak Development Authority, the Department of Fisheries, the Government of Manipur, the Sinheibi Development Organization, and the Champu Khangpok Floating Village Conservation and Management Committee participated in the Fisherman Card enrollment program, which was organized under the auspices of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).

About 400 people live in this unusual community, the largest of its kind in India, and they depend on traditional fishing techniques that are intricately linked to the ecology of the lake. In order to promote financial inclusion and improve economic stability, the initiative will provide the villagers with access to all necessary financial services, government assistance programs, and other facilities. The National Fisheries Digital Platform includes this.

The villagers would be better equipped to secure their livelihoods and take advantage of the welfare programs in place thanks to the Fisherman Card, which will connect them to various government initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kiran Samridhi Sah-Yojana. This program will fit within a broader framework for the region’s sustainable development. In order for the community and the environment to grow together, it will fortify the citizens of Champu Khangpok while preserving the Loktak Lake ecology. This project will be a significant step toward a high standard of living in this special floating community.
