National People’s Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday said the party would work to meet the growing expectations of the people of Manipur by strengthening its organisational base and emerging as a strong political force in the 2027 Assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference after the party’s Annual Convention at the MFSDS Hall in Imphal, Sangma said the NPP was committed to expanding its presence across the state while contributing to the restoration of peace and normalcy in violence-hit Manipur. During his two-day visit, he inaugurated the party’s state office, reviewed organisational preparedness for the 2027 polls and held meetings with party leaders and representatives from different sections of society.
Sangma said discussions focused on the prevailing situation in Manipur, the condition of internally displaced persons (IDPs), economic challenges and the party’s role in promoting lasting peace. He emphasised that while the government must address the state’s problems, the NPP would continue making every possible effort to support the peace process.
Describing the Manipur crisis as highly complex, Sangma said there was no easy solution but stressed that sustained dialogue and trust-building among communities were essential. He added that any resolution must safeguard national security while ensuring the welfare of the people.
Highlighting the party’s growth since its electoral debut in Manipur in 2017, Sangma described the NPP as a “home-grown party” with a deep understanding of the Northeast. He said public demand for a political alternative had increased expectations from the party, which it would strive to fulfil. The NPP also plans to expand its organisational network across every Assembly constituency, while a decision on the number of seats to contest in the 2027 elections will be taken at a later stage.
