BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh is anticipated to take the oath as the new Chief Minister of Manipur today, with the ceremony expected at approximately 6 pm at Lok Bhavan. Concurrently, BJP leader from the Kuki-Zo community, Nemcha Kipgen, and Losii Dikho from the Naga People’s Front (NPF) are expected to be inaugurated as Deputy Chief Ministers. Govindas Konthoujam is set to assume responsibility for the Home Department in the new government.
This oath-taking ceremony will be conducted in the presence of eminent BJP leaders and coalition partners, marking the official establishment of the new government in the northeastern state. Recently, Khemchand was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in Manipur, which signifies a pivotal moment in forming a stable government following a year of political uncertainty caused by Biren Singh’s resignation and the subsequent imposition of President’s rule amid ethnic disturbances.
Supporters and well-wishers have actively celebrated the occasion by congratulating Khemchand’s family with firecrackers and public festivities. Khemchand has expressed his dedication to promoting empathy, compassion, and harmony among all communities within the state. On social media, he extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP leadership for their trust in electing him as the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh, aged 62, has a substantial background in Manipur’s political arena, having served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022. He held crucial ministerial roles between 2022 and 2025, specifically in Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and the Education Department. Additionally, Khemchand is notable for his engagement in sports, particularly Taekwondo, where in late 2025 he became the first Indian to earn the 5th Dan black belt in traditional Taekwondo, designated by the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul.
