Residents Warn Against Obstruction in Road Construction Work

As the long-awaited construction of the Indo–Burma Sugnu Road has officially begun, Meira Paibis of Pangantabi and local clubs have strongly cautioned against any form of obstruction or interference in the road development work. The State Highway stretch from Wabagai Lamkhai to Sugnu, which had remained neglected for many years despite repeated demands for renovation, has now been taken up for construction. In this connection, the Pangantabi Meira Paibis and the Southeastern Manipur Development Organization (SEMDO), Pangantabi, jointly held a public meeting and expressed their stance against any activities that may hinder the ongoing work. Speaking at the gathering, SEMDO Club Secretary Irom Arunkumar stated that the Indo–Burma Sugnu Road has been in a deplorable condition for several years. Due to the poor condition of the road, many commuters have suffered hardships, and numerous accidents have occurred. Several individuals have reportedly lost their lives, while many women and others sustained serious injuries and were unable to reach hospitals on time due to the damaged road.
He further mentioned that Sugnu Assembly Constituency MLA K. Ranjit had earlier raised the issue multiple times in the Assembly, urging that the road be properly reconstructed. During the present government’s tenure, after due approval from the concerned Ministry, the Governor of Manipur, along with the Chief Secretary and Commissioner, initiated the necessary steps for the construction of the road from Wabagai Lamkhai to Sugnu.

He appealed to all organisations and groups not to create any obstruction in the construction process. Considering the large number of people who depend on this vital road for their livelihood and daily movement, he urged that the work be completed with high quality standards. He also stated that the executing company and contractor must ensure quality construction. If any organisation attempts to disrupt the work under the pretext of monetary demands or other pressures without following proper quality control procedures, the Meira Paibis and local clubs will not remain silent. He further appealed that no unnecessary interference be made in the ongoing project. Meanwhile, Pangantabi Meira Paibi Secretary Ningthoujam Ibechou said that the road serves as a lifeline for more than two lakh people. The public has warmly welcomed the commencement of the construction work. She warned that if any group attempts to halt the project by making monetary demands or creating disturbances, the womenfolk will strongly oppose such actions and will not allow any disruption to the development work
