Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. (SHRI), under its exclusive agreement with the Government of Tripura, has facilitated the first-ever back-to-back kidney transplants in Agartala. The procedures were conducted on March 30 and 31 at AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, taking the total number of kidney transplants under the program in Tripura to seven.
The transplants were carried out in coordination between the Shija transplant team and the team at AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, with continued clinical support and guided expertise contributing to the steady strengthening of local transplant capabilities.
Dr. Somorendro Paonam, Consultant Urologist, Shija Hospitals, reiterated Shija’s commitment to supporting the Agartala team in progressing towards operational independence. He also emphasized the development of cadaveric transplant protocols to address the growing need for organ donation.
Since initiating its transplant program in 2016, Shija Hospitals has achieved key milestones, including the region’s first ABO-incompatible transplant in 2021 and the first deceased donor transplant in 2023. The hospital has successfully completed 130 kidney transplants, including 5 from deceased donors, and continues to play a significant role in advancing transplant services in Northeast India. It may be recalled that the National Health Mission (NHM), Tripura, and Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. (SHRI) signed an RBSK-Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at NHM, Tripura, in 2023.
